A wise manager will follow a protocol that asks: Do we really need to fill the job, or is this an opportunity for an internal developmental candidates? Is the job description for the position complete (including behavioral dimensions / competencies) and, most importantly, current? Who is available internally to do this job? Are my managers skilled interviewers? Is our interview process targeted toward predictors of success? Do we have a process in place to collect and objectively synthesize input from all interviewers? Do employees feel that hiring / selection processes are objective and “fair”?
